Justice has been served!
News broke today of the punishments against the Houston Cheaters.. I mean Astros. The MLB suspended manager AJ Hinch and GM Jeff Luhnow for the 2020 season without pay, the Astros were fined $5 million, and have been forced to forfeit 1st and 2nd round draft picks from 2020 and 2021.
Additionally, MLB will fine the Astros $5 million and take away their first- and second-round picks in the 2020 and 2021 drafts, sources tell ESPN.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 13, 2020
Then Astros owner Jim Crane took the podium and did the responsible thing by firing those no-good cheaters. The MLB and the Astros had no choice but to respond in this way to defend the integrity of the game.
There were no punishments handed down to the players involved in the cheating scandal. I feel like there should have been punishments/suspensions for the players involved but I am pleasantly surprised with how the MLB handled this situation. Rob Manfred showed the league that you can't keep cheating a secret and it is certainly no laughing matter.
Next up is the Red Sox! Alex Cora was the bench coach for the Astros and then managed the Red Sox in 2018 when they allegedly also used video technology to steal signs. Reports are that Cora could likely face greater punishments than Hinch following the MLB's investigation of the Red Sox.
The investigation into the Astros took about three months. If the Red Sox investigation takes as long they will be looking at a great deal of drama just as the team is starting to get into the swing of things at spring training.
This was a great day for baseball
